Narrow and pyramidal when young, this evergreen grows more rounded and open with age. Needles are a nice dark green to blue-green in colour.  This tree develops oblong cones that are greenish-purple when young but mature to a purplish-green.

The cones, which never open, have edible seeds. The pine nuts are consumed as food in Europe, primarily coming from stone pines, namely, this species and Pinus pinea (Italian stone pine).
