Magnolia 'Butterflies'Magnolia hybrid 'Butterflies'
Height: 5m
Width: 3m
Zone: 5
Exposure: Sun to part shade
Lightly fragrant yellow flowers (10 cm) appear in spring before the leaves appear. Narrow, pointed green leaves turn gray to brown in fall. Seldom pollinated or fruiting. Pyramidal when young, maturing to a straight trunk and a rounded crown.
Unlike most magnolia, which are grown as a multi-stemmed form, this magnolia usually has a straight trunk. Grows best in a slightly acidic soil and is intolerant of drought, excessive moisture, and pollution. Any necessary pruning should be done soon after flowering, to allow the plant enough time to reset buds for the following year.
Place in a sheltered location and wrap for the first few winters to protect flower buds and prevent sunscald.
