Pyramidal when young, maturing to a straight trunk and a rounded crown.  Fragrant yellow flowers (7cm) appear in early spring before the leaves.  Leaves are oval in shape, up to 20cm long.  Fall colour is yellow, gold and brown.

Grows best in a slightly acidic soil and is intolerant of drought, excessive moisture, and pollution. Any necessary pruning should be done soon after flowering, to allow the plant enough time to reset buds for the following year. 

Place in a sheltered location, out of harsh winter winds.  Wrap for the first couple of winters to protect flower buds and to prevent sunscald.
