A large specimen tree with distinctive sulphur-yellow buds in spring, producing flattened, spherical inedible nuts later in the season. Large, compound leaves. Hardwood tree used for furniture and pulpwood.

Bitternut hickory need a lot of water during the summer, so consider collecting rainwater to help keep the soil moist. Adaptable to a range of soil conditions and moistures. Once considered hard to transplant. Newer nursery practices are changing this concept.
