Emerald CedarThuja occidentalis 'Emerald' (Smaragd)
Height: 4-5 m
Width: 1-2 m
Zone: 3
Exposure: Sun to part shade
Upright, narrow, conical to pyramidal habit. Dense, emerald-green foliage gets a hint of bronze in winter. An excellent plant for screening or to create a vertical accent in the garden.
Typically grown as a hedge, emerald cedars can also be used in groupings for privacy screens. This cultivar is a good solution for landscapes where space is an issue, as it stays very narrow and compact. Widely used for pruning into formal topiary, such as spirals. Damage or stem breakage may occur in the winter from ice and snow accumulation. Protection from drying winter winds is recommended in an exposed location. Deer find the soft evergreen foliage very attractive for winter food and will rapidly strip a plant.
