Ohio BuckeyeAesculus glabra
Height: 10-12 m
Width: 9-10 m
Zone: 3
Exposure: Sun to part shade
This tree is a smaller-growing Aesculus compared to other cultivars. The green compound leaves emerge in spring followed by clusters of single, green-white-yellow flowers in mid-spring.
A good selection for more remote areas of the landscape, including native plant and woodland areas.
Native to Ontario and other parts of North America.
Indigenous peoples reportedly called the fruit of this tree “hetuck” meaning eye-of-the-buck, in reference to the shiny dark mahogany-brown fruit, resembling the eye of a buck deer.
