Red OakQuercus rubra
Height: 16-22 m
Width: 15-20 m
Zone: 4
Exposure: Sun
Native to Ontario
Large Oak with a rounded, broad-spreading, somewhat irregular form. Dark green leaves in the Summer, turning red to brown in the Fall. Inconspicuous flowers (catkins) are followed by acorns.
A slow-growing, large shade tree at maturity, it needs space in which to grow. Acorns are a favourite food of wildlife. (Native) Oaks, according to Tallamy, support 534 species of lepidoptera (butterfly and moth) caterpillars– more than any other native tree or plant.
