Hick's YewTaxus x media 'Hicksii'
Height: 2.5-3 m
Width: 1.5-1.75 m
Zone: 5
Dense, columnar evergreen with sharply ascending branches. Dark green needles with small, round, fleshy, red berries on mature stems. Excellent evergreen for tight hedging. Yews are extremely maleable in form and can be modified in form.
A versatile evergreen tolerating heavy pruning, making it ideal for hedges, screens, foundation plantings and topiary landscapes. It can also be left unpruned for a softer textured landscape. A very columnar-growing cultivar, making it a good vertical accent. Protection (burlap wrap) from drying winter winds is recommended in an exposed location. All parts of the plant are poisonous to human beings, dogs, cats, and horses, except the flesh of the basically tasteless berry. The hard seed inside the berry is also poisonous. The poison does not seem to affect deer. Mature taxus specimens have the ability to regrow from old wood; older specimens in the garden can be rejuvenated.
Extremely low tolerance for wet, poorly-drained conditions.
